Africa DRC Pende culture first half XX century
A beautiful so called Ikhoko, a carved miniature masque after the larger wooden ones in a ivory pendant form. It was worn around the neck as a protective healing charm and to prevent sickness in general.
This is a classical example with a beard (mwevu)), very well preserved, some traces of the dark blue pigment and the typical Pende circle ornaments.
There is a drill hole and a piece of (later) material of the attachment still inside.
